Here’s what’s happening this week.
• Joe Mungovan kicks off his tour of NSW this Sunday in Forster. You might know him as drummer for Tommy M & The Mastersounds, but Mungovan is in solo acoustic mode this time around. With songstress Imogen Clark along for the ride too, the ‘‘Mountains To The Sea’’ tour pulls into Rad on February 12.
• A fair bit of local gig action announced this week, with a few internationals heading our way soon.
American singer-songwriter Cass McCombs is in Australia for the Laneway Festival, and has announced a very special last-minute show at Wombarra Bowling Club on February 4. Local guys Shining Bird, Ocean Party and Emma Russack are also on the bill co-presented by Music Farmers and Yours & Owls, and with capacity limited to just 100, tickets are flying out.
Tilian Pearson, vocalist with US post-hardcore band Dance Gavin Dance, is headed our way on February 14. He will bring his more indie-pop sensibilities to the region on Valentines Day, headlining the Youngbloods club night at Hostage X.
Sunny surf pop outfit Major Leagues have locked in a local date as well. They’re off around the country launching debut EP Weird Season, backed up by Triple J favourite single Endless Drain. The Den is the place to be if you want to check them out, as they play alongside We’rewolf on February 6.
• Speaking of The Den, the regular band night at City Diggers has a new schedule. It will shift from Sundays to Wednesdays from February 5, and will feature a local line-up including Blueberry Circuit and Lucha Libre to mark its inaugural midweek outing.
LIVE AND LOCAL
• The place to be on Australia Day is Hotel Illawarra, with the fast-approaching-cult-status Parkside party back on. They will take over the inside and outside of the venue from 3pm, with Melbourne acts Francis Inferno Orchestra and Fantastic Man topping the bill. It will fill up fast so get down early.
• The recently reformed SuperJesus will bring a little ’90s rock back to the region as they make their way to the Towradgi Beach Hotel tonight. The Art are in support, and tickets are still available.
• Mega star DJ Will Sparks is on his way too, playing Hostage X on Saturday night.
• Finally, young Kiama dudes The Vanns will be hoping for a nice local showing as their co-headlining tour with The Familiars comes to Rad on Saturday. It’s only the second show of their tour, which crawls up the east coast over the next two weeks, so come out and help the tour off to a good start.
