Whilst I completely support the opening of international borders for strategic commercial reasons like education and business, the concept of International leisure travel as we knew it seems a long way off given the high stakes game of international Tetris, which will be in play as different countries open to personal allies for political expediency.

There is no doubt that in the short to medium term, self-drive domestic travel is going to be the safest option for Australians looking to enjoy a holiday at home.

I had an opportunity to get out on Grand Pacific Drive last week and came across some outstanding new products, which are well worth a visit as your passport continues to gather dust in the bottom draw this year.

When the Sea Cliff Bridge was built it wasn't expected to become Wollongong' "Opera House"; the must do picture opportunity as you travel down the coast. The combination of stunning architecture in an incredible natural setting has made it world renown and the people have most certainly come to enjoy it!

The Imperial Hotel at Clifton is about to take that Sea Cliff Bridge experience to the next level. An absolute stunning heritage renovation, The Imperial has a little something for everyone, be it, a quick sandwich after a walk on the bridge through to a formal wedding featuring a view money could not buy.

The Imperial will become a must do experience for anyone travelling along the Grand Pacific Drive, a credit to the Shellharbour Club and a wonderful new addition to the visitor economy of the South Coast.

The Links Shell Cove is well known as one of the great tests for golfers on the South Coast but more recently, The Links has evolved into an entertainment precinct for the whole family. Recent renovations to the clubhouse include a large deck area with 180 degree views of the escarpment and golf course, and a playground area for kids to kick a ball and run around whilst parents enjoy the hospitality.

The Jewel in the crown though is opening next month with Shanx Mini Golf. The Augusta National of Mini Golf courses, Shanx will keep the kids entertained for hours (if they are able to get the putters off Mum and Dad) enjoying the great views, chilled music and challenging putting test perfectly positioned for an afternoon of family fun.

I'm sure it's no secret to the Gerringong locals, but as we headed home coming across The Hill Bar and Kitchen was akin to finding a swimming pool in the desert. Postcard views of Werri Beach merging into farmland, all day dining and friendly staff pumping out cocktails to a great looking crowd of visitors and local alike.

The Hill Bar and Kitchen is the perfect example of building the right product in the right location, people will most certainly follow.

We spent some time in Jervis Bay enjoying the recently renovated Portside Café at Jervis Bay Wild before coming across something, so perfect for its simplicity.

As self-drive continues to be the COVID transport option of choice, it's becoming increasingly hard to fit four mountain bikes, three paddle boards, two kids, daisy the cavoodle and the mother in law all in the back of the Holden Torana.

Imagine not having to take everything including the kitchen sink every time you went to the beach because you were able to hire it cheaply and conveniently, when you arrive.

Notwithstanding creating new jobs, you also open up the concept of using public transport to get to busy spots, potentially alleviating parking issues and traffic congestion. Jervis Bay Paddle Sports are certainly onto something, long may it continue.

As we continue on our journey to COVID normal, let us hope the concepts of common sense and simplicity start to trump the computer says no concept of bureaucracy, opening up great new reasons to visit and enjoy all the South Coast has to offer.
