The proposed 6000 square metre development will be located at the intersection of College Avenue and Benson Avenue, at the southern end of Stockland Shellharbour, opposite where Shellharbour City Council proposes to build its City Hub complex.
The site is currently occupied by a temporary car park.
A Stockland spokeswoman said on completion, the large format retail centre ‘‘would consist of up to four new retailers, offering a range of products to cater for customers’ lifestyle and family needs’’.
‘‘This could include everything from homewares to haberdashery and adventure sporting goods to white goods and home appliances,’’ the spokeswoman said.
Stockland development manager Phill Newton said plans to add a large format retail centre adjacent to Stockland Shellharbour, were in response to customers’ feedback.
‘‘We’ve listened to these requests and hope to add an exciting, new dimension to the retail experience at Stockland Shellharbour,’’ Mr Newton said.
“We are at a very early stage in the process, and all plans are subject to council approval, but we’ve tested the water with some big name brands and they’ve each expressed a strong interest in coming to Shellharbour.”
The site adjoins the main centre’s southern loading dock.
Mr Newton said Stockland Shellharbour would remain fully operational during the development program, with all work carefully scheduled and co-ordinated to minimise disruption to customers and retailers.
Up to 100 potential new jobs would be created, he said.
Stockland also has a separate development application under consideration by Shellharbour Council, to overhaul the Holm Place and College Avenue forecourt of its shopping centre to encourage better use of the area.
Stockland is proposing a $4.5million ‘‘refresh’’ of the area known as the city square dining precinct by replacing the existing stage with two additional restaurant tenancies.
Stockland completed its $330 million redevelopment and expansion of Stockland Shellharbour in 2013, which doubled the size of the former Shellharbour Square centre to more than 75,000 square metres.
