These two groups – as well as trainees – had been overlooked until now and had to purchase paper tickets for public transport.
But with most paper tickets being retired from January 1 next year, these groups needed Opal access.
As of Monday, they can sign up for the Opal concession card, which is already available for use by university students and job seekers.
And they will be able to get a fare concession any time they travel.
‘‘Apprentices and trainees are currently only able to access concession fares when travelling between their home, workplace and place of training, but from today we’re lifting those restrictions,” Transport Minister Andrew Constance said.
‘‘They will be able to access the concession fare for travel at any time on the public transport system plus access Opal benefits.’’
TAFE students must be enrolled full-time for a minimum of 20 face-to-face contract hours a week to be eligible.
Apprentices and trainees must have their NSW Concession Card before they apply online for their Opal card.
