Saturday at the mall amphitheatre five of the Illawarra’s Olympians will be in attendance and the call has gone out for kids and big kids to don the green and gold – Australia’s sporting colours _ in honour of our Olympics.
There will be a special presentation for Wollongong’s Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery to two of our region's three Olympic gold medallists.
Four-time Olympic medalist in the pool Emma McKeon and rugby sevens gold medallist Nicole Beck will be presented with the keys to the city.
Beck’s rugby sevens team-mate Emma Tonegato is still overseas and therefore unavailable.
Also in attendance and to be celebrated are our Matilda’s star striker Michelle Heyman (pictured), Gerringong’s hockey star Grace Stewart and swimming star David McKeon.
There will be a chance for people to get autographs of their stars there.
It’s all happening from 10 am.
There will be a wet weather venue if required, but hopefully it will not be needed.
It’s a massive day for the Wollongong CBD with the first heats of the Illawarra’s Next Top Model and the first weekend opening of fashion chain H&M.
Keep an eye on the Illawarra Mercury’s Facebook page and we will let you know if anything changes.
Come out and support our local Illawarra sporting heroes.
LIBERALS NO SURPRISE
The Liberal Party not running a candidate in the byelection for the seat of Wollongong should hardly come as a surprise
Many will again question see it is a further sign of the party’s lack of interest in the city, but in truth it may well be the opposite. The seat of Wollongong is still very much a Labor stronghold.
The best chance of knocking off an apparent strong Labor candidate in Paul Scully would be a strong independent candidate.
That became clear on Thursday with Wollongong’s Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery declaring his hand to stand.
The more candidates that run, the harder it will be for anyone to dilute the vote and the political playmakers will understand that. Labor will throw everything and the kitchen sink at this.
