Stockland has lodged plans with Shellharbour City Council for an area near its Shellharbour shopping centre to be known as City Square. The City Square is part of Stockland's planned $260 million shopping centre redevelopment and will be dedicated as public open space. The plaza, designed to take in views over Lake Illawarra, will be built on land at the eastern end of Memorial Dr and east of College Ave and will provide alfresco dining, a community stage and child play areas."The City Square plans remain consistent with the already approved Stockland redevelopment DA and the Shellharbour City master plan to link Stockland Shellharbour with the city centre," a Stockland spokeswoman said.In February Stockland announced it had put the redevelopment on hold following a review of all planned future projects in its development pipeline. The redevelopment had been welcomed as a major boost for the Shellharbour region, set to create 1100 jobs post-completion, and 900 equivalent construction jobs. The 35,000sqm expansion will increase the centre's retail space to more than 75,000sqm, providing the Illawarra's largest range of shops under one roof. The spokeswoman said the company was committed to starting the redevelopment when market conditions improved. "In the meantime, Stockland will continue design work to ensure the redevelopment creates a modern and contemporary shopping environment to meet the everyday shopping needs of the community," the spokeswoman said."Stockland will update the local community as it moves forward with the redevelopment. In the interim, business at Stockland Shellharbour will continue as normal."
