Witnesses saw a man, possibly aged in his 20s, driving at "excessively high speed" in his red Subaru Impreza about 7.40am in a northerly direction along Croome Road on Thursday.
The man lost control coming around a curve and hit a tree.
Witnesses reported the man unsuccessfully flagging down a passing car. He tried again, a driver pulled over, the man got in the car and left the wreckage.
Police are now trying to identify the driver.
Lake Illawarra Police District Chief Inspector Brian Pederson said officers would speak to the car's registered owner.
"We are trying to ascertain whether the car was stolen, it may be unregistered or the driver could be unlicenced," he said.
"We don't know why the driver left."
Police inquires continue.
