Coregas - which manufactures industrial and medical gases - will develop the facility that will support the eventual introduction of zero emission hydrogen fuel cell trucks to the Illawarra.
Switching from diesel to hydrogen is expected to deliver a 50 per cent reduction in emissions when production of fuel is taken into account.
"The project also represents a strategic first step in developing a broader hydrogen ecosystem for Port Kembla and Illawarra-Shoalhaven," a Coregas spokesperson said.
"The region is primed to be an epicentre of the emerging hydrogen sector possessing several advantages to foster the development of a thriving domestic and export hydrogen sector."
