But the work won't be as drastic as in the city, which saw sections of Smith Street become one-way to fit a cycling lane and created some controversy and confusion for motorists.
The Port Kembla cycleway will run from the station along Darcy Road and Military Road to just beyond the Church Street intersection.
From there a new shared pathway will be built down to King George V Park - retaining parking along Military Road in line with residents' feedback - and then a pop-up cycleway will head to Hill 60.

The first stage of works will see a separated on-road cycleway built along the north-eastern side of Military Road, from the police station at Darcy Road intersection to Marne Street.
"This is a pilot project, and we rely on local knowledge to help us identify whether further adjustments are needed to improve and make this a success," Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said.
"We'll be checking back in with the Port Kembla community once we've completed this work to find out how this pop-up route is working."
Construction of a permanent shared path along Military Road is scheduled for winter 2022 and is a separate project to the Port Kembla Pop-Up Cycling Routes Program.
