With the state looking to turn the Illawarra into a hydrogen hub, Mr Scully said it made sense to put the power into practice on the city's most popular bus route.
"I want to clearly demonstrate to the NSW Government that the Wollongong community is ready, willing and able to get involved in delivering the NSW Hydrogen Strategy," the Wollongong MP said.
"There are buses made in NSW that are ready to be used in a hydrogen trial.
"If the NSW Government is serious about using hydrogen to future-proof the Illawarra, then there is no better place to start."
The Wollongong MP has launched a petition on his website calling for Transport for NSW to bring a zero emissions bus trial to the Illawarra.
He said it would be a reward for the region that had shown "enthusiastic support for the development of a green hydrogen industry and hydrogen hub in the Illawarra."
The state government has started the ball rolling on trials on net zero emissions buses and the associated technologies.
Wollongong was looked at as a potential location for the trial but was knocked back due to a lack of a suitable partner.
In May last year, Transport for NSW called for expressions of interest from bus companies across the state that wanted to participate in the trial.
"Transport for NSW is working to transition the state's entire 8000-plus fleet to zero emissions buses by 2030," a Transport for NSW spokesman said.
"As part of the Zero Emission Bus Transition Strategy, Transport for NSW has committed to undertaking trials of hydrogen fuel cell electric buses.
"These trials will assist Transport for NSW in determining the best option for zero emission technology, especially for buses operating in Outer Metro and Regional areas."
