Seventh-wicket pair Luke Jongwe and Clive Madande hit 24 runs in the last over to pull off a thrilling four-wicket win in Colombo on Tuesday.
Batting first, Sri Lanka made 6-173. The tourists reached the last over needing 20 runs.
Though bowled by the veteran Angelo Mathews they hit three sixes, the first of which was a no-ball, and a four.
Off the fourth legal ball Maheesh Theekshana got under comfortably a skier from Jongwe, but dropped it. The next ball Madande hit Mathews for a winning six over deep mid-wicket.
Captain Craig Ervine had previously posted a career-best 70 off 54 balls including six fours and two sixes.
But Zimbabwe were behind the rate before Jongwe and Madande scored 35 runs off 13 balls.
Jongwe was unbeaten on 25 off 12 deliveries while Madande hit 15 off five balls.
The series decider will be played on Thursday.
Earlier Charith Asalanka and Mathews scored half-centuries sharing a 118-run partnership off 79 balls to lift Sri Lanka after they had crashed to 4-27.
Asalanka made 69 off 39 balls, Mathews was unbeaten on 66 off 51.
But he was unable to match with the ball his success with the bat.
